Virtual Internship Opportunity (for credit)

This is an opportunity to bring on one or more students from the Graphic Design Program at Mohawk College to work with you as virtual interns, in project-based experiences. Students will work on one or more projects of your choosing over the internship period, connecting with you as needed to apply their skills in rigorous design processes, virtual design tools, and critical design thinking.

Students are available for full and part-time positions, with a minimum requirement of 100 work hours.

All placements are for credit.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, student placements will only occur virtually.

Deliverable will be agreed upon between the students and the employer.

Students will also be asked to keep a weekly logbook of their experiences, and submit a comprehensive report as part of their final assessment.

Exemples de projets

Students are prepared to become culturally aware Communication Designers capable of working across a range of domains and industries, including design units within corporate, government and non-government organisations. The program emphasizes 2D design in print and web design as well as areas in 3D design such as packaging and display design.

Students will apply their knowledge of print design, interactivity, and motion graphics with a focus on illustration, typography, wayfinding, information design and other opportunities with the following skillsets:

Visual Design

  • Students engage in all aspects of the design process: research, analysis, iteration, prototyping, presentation and evaluation
  • Observation, understanding visual forms, communicating visually, research skills, creative problem-solving, creative analysis
  • Theory and practice, exploring cultural, historical, technical, ecological, and theoretical issues within design
  • Composition, typography, visual rhetoric
  • Editorial infographics, instructional graphics, and data visualization
  • Art direction
  • Design principles as they apply to different media such as ebooks, web sites, emags, print, etc.
  • Information design, location-based media, book design

File management & workflow for both digital + print projects

Adobe Suite

Adobe InDesign (publication design + layout, prep for print production, advanced typography)

Adobe Illustrator (vector graphics, illustration, infographics)

Adobe Photoshop (raster graphics, photo editing

Other skillsets may include:

  • Adobe After Effects (motion graphics, basic video compositing and effects)
  • Operating Risograph machines and preparing artwork for Riso printing (including advanced color separation techniques also applicable to other mediums like silkscreen or Pantone spot colours)
  • Shooting digital photography, camera skills, and Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw
  • Shooting and editing digital video, and Adobe Premiere
  • Interactive projects and prototypes, with some overlap and crossover courses with the Interaction Design area. Often prototyping tools like Adobe XD, InVision, or Sketch
  • Web technologies like HTML/CSS/JS, using CMS platforms, or coding.
  • Preparing art for laser or plotter cutting

Soft skills: interpersonal communication, open creative collaboration, entrepreneurial + marketing skills
