Applied Project Management in Tourism

Are you in the tourism industry? Do your organization have a project you need help tackling? In this course, students will apply theory, concepts, tools and skills learned throughout their Tourism Management degree to a team-based project for your organization. Students will diagnose a real life organizational problem, develop a set of alternative solutions, and make recommendations to you based on a clear rationale. They will then determine appropriate deliverables based on their recommendation to generate for you. The project may include deliverables for one or more functional areas such as strategic planning, finance, marketing, human resources, operations, or technology.
Kaizen Process Improvement Virtual Workshops

Dovetailing from the learnings of TOUR 250 (Tourism Operations I) and lectures from this course, student teams (we) will be required to collaborate with tourism industry partners (you) and facilitate an online Kaizen process improvement workshop. In addition, student teams will provide our collaborating industry partner with a written report of the workshop outcomes, analyses, recommendations, and ideas. The heart of this final project centres on the question, “how could we improve processes to create a better visitor and employee experience?” The Kaizen workshop is very reactive and problem-solving in nature, imbibing the principle that small incremental improvements will cascade into long-term positive changes. Thus, analyzing, identifying, and recommending such improvements will be the overall goal of the project.
Service Learning Practicum

Do you have a research project or work placement opportunity in psychology? Bring on one or more Psychology students from Capilano University in their 4th year to work with your organization. Students will gain experience applying their knowledge of psychology to working in your community organization, under the supervision of the course instructor and an employer or volunteer supervisor. Students will meet regularly with their supervisors to discuss their progress, and will produce reports and presentations related to their practicum experience. Students will be available to work on with your organization for up to 48 hours a 12-week period.

Upon completion of the project, you will receive a detailed report and presentation. Our students will be in either their 3rd or 4th year of their undergraduate degree. Many of the students are also from our North America Business Management program and already have professional work experience.

In this project, student-consultants working in small teams will analyze the current international business environment in your specific industry and the opportunities and challenges you face. Students will then apply their knowledge best practices of small and medium enterprises and multinationals in developed, emerging, and developing countries and common markets towards addressing your challenges and capitalizing on your opportunities. The students will develop a report and presentation for your organization upon completion of the project.

But what they all share is the passion, compassion and commitment to make a positive difference in the world. Students will use their knowledge and skills to develop strategies to become change makers for non profit organizations. In this assignment, students will work closely with a non-profit organizing to plan and conduct public outreach for your event. Depending on your needs, students can assist with event promotion, logistics, communications, social media. This outreach and communications can also take the form of assisting with awareness for an issue your team is raising awareness for.
Tourism Destination Development and Policy Planning

Development Planning of Destinations for Tourism As simulated tourism planning consultancy firms, student groups will be tasked to develop 3 initial strategies on how to reactively and proactively develop the destination given its situation. Specifically, groups will: Formulate three specific destination development strategies to capture your tourist market, tackle related issues, and maximize the most of your tourism destination. Develop at least two new, unique, and profitable tourism products or attractions or activities or services per strategy. Identify the markets that would be best to attract for your destination. Provide strong justification why they are the most appropriate market. Identify your tourism assets and resources, which may be potential or existing natural and heritage/cultural features that motivate tourists to visit. Provide specific and appropriate Visitor Management Strategies in anticipation for future increase of tourism visitors.

It is imperative that these strategies be realistic and workable taking into account the challenges faced by the non profit. In order to do this, students would need to do a situational analysis of the organization using primary and secondary research that will be reflected in their reports and presentations.
